What's New?
I just recently transfered to UH Manoa after attending San Diego State University for three years. I am working towards my degree in Business and a minor in Economics. My reason for leaving San Diego had a lot to do with their business program. They were unable to adequately help me with my future plans, whereas UH can. So now that my reason is written in black and white, maybe some people will stop razzing me for having alterior motives. The main thing is that I am so happy to be home! I finally get to be close to most of my friends, my supportive family, and my loving boyfriend! The next step in my life is to GRADUATE! It seems like the day will never come, but when it does my life will change dramatically and I'm sure I'll be begging to go back to school, OR NOT!

Upon graduation, I plan to move back to Kaua'i where I would like to start my career off in economic development and hopefully build towards opening my own business. This has been of interest to me since high school because of my economics teacher, Mrs. Renee Martin. Our economics class was assigned a semester project that required us to establish a company and run it for a week. I wanted to get my hands in there so that I could know everything that was going on inside the business. So I became the Vice President of Finance, typical of me. This was not an easy task, but I made it work as we put together an ice cream business. Surprisgly, we were successful and ended up paying off our shareholders anywhere from $20 to $250. Note that this cash amount was a lot considering that we (the economic students) were the shareholders. I have a lot of gratitude towards Mrs. Martin because she has shown me a way to display my talents while creating and maintaining a business of my own.
Semester Project
My group has been working on a project for my Information Systems class. I am responsible for creating a website for the company. More information can be found on the class website under Group Project Option A. Here are some of the requirements from the website:
Project Description: You are budding entrepreneurs who have decided to start an on-line business. You approach me, an Angel investor, to solicit me to provide funds to start-up your company. Before I will do this, I ask you to provide me with the following:
  1. What is it that you are going to sell? What is your product line?
  2. Who is your target audience and what are the demographics for this audience (age, number, gender, income, career, buying power, geographic region,…The ones that are important to the sale of your product or how you identify your target market)?
  3. What is your business strategy (Refer to Porter's Generic Strategies)?
  4. Who are your competitors? How much do they sell?
  5. Perform a Competitive Assessment - how are you going to get a competitive advantage? Usually you will evaluate your competitions strengths and weaknesses to look for ways to mitigate their strengths and exploit their weaknesses.
  6. Are you/How are you going to use IT to gain a competitive advantage?
  7. What IT features/systems do you need to support your enterprise?
  8. How are you going to attract and retain customers?
  9. Create a prototype of your site depicting how you think the site will operate (NOTE: since this is a prototype, back end IT systems do not need to actually work. For example, if you plan to use a database to store customer information so that you can personalize their shopping experience, you can "hard code" an example directly into your web site to show me how it would work - you do not have to actually have a database and access it through your site).
  10. Your prototype should follow a "typical user experience." Basically, identify something a typical user would do with this system and then develop a prototype that would allow this typical user to do what you identified.
